Is the Honda Fit's gas tank under the front seat, a cause for concern?
Dear Tom and Ray: My wife wants to buy a Honda Fit, but now she is worried about the gas tank. It is located under the front seat rather than under the trunk. Is this dangerous? -- Prentiss

Low fuel level: running on empty
Dear Tom and Ray: I have a 1988 Chevy pickup. Last week I had the gas tank down more than it had ever been. It indicated 1/8 tank. While starting from a stop with the truck facing slightly downhill, the engine stalled. Did the the gas tank cause this? The truck has 25,000 miles and has always run perfectly. I'm getting a new gas filter today. Any other suggestions? Russ

What to do about a humming fuel pump...
Dear Tom and Ray: I have a 1981 Volvo DL with a humming fuel pump. From inside, it sounds like a hum, from outside it sounds like a buzz. The hum/buzz gets louder when the gas tank gets below 1/2 full. My husband called our repair shop and they said this was pretty normal. Is it? Pam

How do you test a seatbelt for effectiveness?
Dear Tom and Ray: How can I tell if the seat belts in my 1980 Buick Regal work? Alan

A car with more pep...
Dear Tom and Ray: I currently own a 1986 Volvo 240. I am pleased with my car, but I'd like my next car to have more pep. I am considering the Volvo 740 GLE with the multi-valve engine. What do you think? Robert

Windows up or down for better gas mileage?
Dear Tom and Ray: Please answer a question that has been bothering me for over five years. I have asked everybody I know, and no one has given me a logical answer. I want to cool the passenger compartment of my car as efficiently as possible. Do you get better gas mileage (all factors being equal) by using the "2/60 method" (two windows rolled down, driving 60 mph), or by using the car's air conditioner? Mary

My husband's from the stone age...
Dear Tom and Ray: My husband and I have a 1990 Buick. The problem is that he simply refuses to use the air conditioner. We have had new cars for the past several years, and he always says that using the air conditioning in city driving will cause the car to overheat and vapor lock. We have had temperatures approaching 100 this summer, and yet he insists we drive with the windows open, blowing hot air into the car, and completely destroying my hairdo. I asked him if maybe cars these days are made so one could use the air conditioning without a problem. He says no. Please comment on this in your column. Betty

Blame your in-laws!
Dear Tom and Ray: Here's one for you! Ever since my Brother-In-Law adjusted the idle speed on my '85 Mazda 626, it just hasn't been the same! Now, when I turn on the air conditioning, the idle revs up and down, up and down, constantly. When I have the air conditioning off, it revs every time I turn the steering wheel at a stop! What can I do? It's dangerous! Adrian

How often should I service my low-milage car?
Dear Tom and Ray: No doubt you've heard of the little old lady. I'm the little old man who drives his car only to church on Sundays--and sometimes to the shopping mall or my place in the country. I just bought myself a new Toyota Tercel. The factory booklet advises some sort of service every 3 months or 3,000 miles. For me, 3 months would mean servicing the car every 1000 miles. This sounds like too much service to me. But then again, maybe I was spoiled by my old car, a used '72 Pinto, which ran trouble free for ten years with just a couple of oil changes a year. How can I do as well with my Tercel? Paul

A tree fell on my tractor...
Dear Tom and Ray: I have a 1976 International Harvester tractor that I use for general farm purposes. About eighteen months ago I made a miscalculation in felling a tree which landed across the middle of the tractor's hood. The only damage I could see was a big dent in the hood which I straightened out. However, ever since then, the tractor has run terribly. The number four cylinder doesn't seem to fire, and gas seems to be mixing with the oil. I have replaced the spark plugs, wires, condenser, coil, and points, but none of that has helped. Is it something serious? Do you have any suggestions? Ned

"Go forth, my son, buyeth yourself a used Nissan."
Dear Tom and Ray: I am looking for a used 4 X 4 pickup. I'd like to get a 1986-89 with a V-6 and extended cab. I like the styling of the Nissan. Are they good, reliable trucks? Edward

Changing the oil and filter while under warranty...
Dear Tom and Ray: I have a car under warranty. Can I change my own oil and filter without jeopardizing the warranty? Earl

Brand-name filling stations vs. convenience store outlets...
Dear Tom and Ray: I own a two year old car. My friends have always told me that it's better to fill up new cars from brand-name filling stations. They say I should avoid convenience store outlets. Any truth to this? David

The "pre-luber"...to buy or not to buy?
Dear Tom and Ray: I've heard that someone makes a device that lubricates the engine with a separate oil pump before the car is started. They claim that it will save significant wear and tear on the engine. Have you heard of such a device, and what do you think of it? Leslie

A stupid idea...
Dear Tom and Ray: About a year ago, I bought a 1985 Toyota Corolla. The first owners babied it, and it's a nice car. The problem is that it has a manual transmission. I have gotten the hang of it, but my wife has decided she will never learn to drive it. Rather than giving up and trading it in, I am considering having the good manual transmission taken out, and replacing it with an automatic. Would that be a) expensive, b) very expensive, or c) a really stupid idea? Jack

Schumacher makes it five in a row
Can anyone beat Tony Schumacher in Top Fuel? Well, sure they can, but the more he wins, the more the psychological weight builds up in opponent's heads. This time it was Larry Dixon who fell to the US Army rail in the finals of the Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals at Maple ...

Is it set, or will Ragan make the Chase?
With four Roush Fenway drivers finishing in the top five I'm sure David Ragan thought his third place finish at Michigan would finally put him in the Chase. Coupled with Hamlin and Kahne finishing 39th and 40th, respectively, the points should start adding up. Ragan even

JGR Caught With Hand In Cookie Jar
Well, there are a lot of people upset with Joe Gibbs Racing right now, and it's no surprise that most of those people are drivers and owners who have seen the rear end of Gibbs cars more than they would like to this season.  JGR and Toyotas have been dominant in ...

The last time that Brian Vickers sat on a pole, was 2006.  Big difference between now and 2006?  In 2006 he drove for Hendrick. Now Vickers, of course, drives for Red Bull Racing, and this is the first time that team has put a driver on the pole in their two ...

Just before NASCAR releases the 2009 schedule, Kansas Speedway decides to make public that they plan to ask NASCAR for a second date in the near future.  I can't imagine that it will happen next year since all three major touring series' schedules should be just about wrapped up by mid-August, ...
